In my childhood, my family is very religious and faithful to God. I remember always going to the temple, doing selfless service(Seva), helping the community out, and praying for one or two hours. I did not understand much of it then but now, I grasp the meaning. In my culture, to pray is to connect with God, not only through the soul but by giving back to the community, even if it’s another culture. The Sikh community will always help anyone and welcome everyone, no matter what race.

Every year on New Year’s Eve, my family will go to the temple around 5 pm and do selfless service(Seva) and pray. We will help in everything including cleaning dishes, mopping floors, helping the elderly, making the food. We will do this until close to midnight and for one or two hours, there is a prayer to wish everyone a prosperous, bright and healthy New Year.  A new religious scripture is opened for the New Year, that same book is read for the entire year and finished until December New Year’s Eve, opening another scripture and so on. My mother always told me that God is always watching out for you, as our one Guru(God) has a plan for you.
